The Shannon Estuary’s existing significance and future potential as shipping corridor of European scale was unfurled by students across the counties of Clare, Kerry and Limerick as Salesians College Pallaskenry claimed the second, biennial Compass Transition Year Schools Competition. Salesians College Pallaskenry, team captain Nathan Goldberg his presented with the award by Sean Kelly MEP. The final of the Shannon Foynes Port Company competition, devised to give students a deeper understanding of its and the estuary’s potential, was attended by over 300 people as All-Ireland winging player and manager Davy Fitzgerald presented the winners with the top prize of a €2,000 cheque for their school and ipads for each of the team members. Held at the Foynes Aviation & Maritime Museum, the Compass (Creating Our Marine, Ports and Schools Synergy) Transition Year Schools Competition drew entries from across the estuary counties, which were whittled down to just six schools - St. Patrick’ Comprehensive, Shannon, Co. Clare; Causeway Comprehensive, Co. Kerry; Salesian College, Pallaskenry; Colaiste Mhuire Askeaton; Castletroy College and Laurel Hill Secondary School from Limerick. Photo: Sean Curtin True Media.

Mid-West TY students will be ‘Shooting the Breeze’ in short-film competition on the Shannon Estuary as an international renewable energy hub. Shannon Foynes Port COMPASS competition, supported by Hunt Museum, returns to deepen awareness of estuary opportunity. TY students across the Mid-West are being given an opportunity to have their say on our future by visualising the transformational potential of the Shannon Estuary as a global renewable energy hub in the decades ahead, in the return of the Shannon Foynes Port Company Compass schools competition. Organised by the port authority, the biennial competition will be an opportunity for TY students in counties Clare, Kerry and Limerick to create a short film that predicts what realising the unprecedented renewable energy opportunity on the Shannon Estuary will do for the region and nation.
